Agentic Commerce Shopify: What to Do Now (2026 Checklist)
By Martin Lovfjall, Editor, MCP Ecommerce · Published · 7 min read

The short answer
For agentic commerce on Shopify, most merchants need to do four things: confirm your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog, complete your store policies, review the Agentic Storefronts settings in admin, and decide per channel whether direct checkout stays on. You do not need to build anything. Rules change often, so verify each channel in the Shopify Help Center.
Agentic commerce on Shopify mostly means checking settings and product data you already own, not building new technology. Shopify has connected its merchants to AI shopping channels through a sales channel in admin called Agentic Storefronts, so the practical work is making sure your catalog, policies and checkout settings are in good shape before AI assistants start recommending your products.
This guide is a checklist for merchants and agencies. It covers what exists today, what to verify, and what can go wrong. Details here were gathered from Shopify's own pages and third-party summaries as of October 2026, and several rules (especially country eligibility) differ between sources. Treat the Shopify Help Center as the final word.
What is agentic commerce for Shopify merchants?
Agentic commerce means an AI assistant helps a shopper find, compare and sometimes buy products on their behalf. For Shopify stores, this happens in AI surfaces such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta apps.
It is different from MCP (Model Context Protocol). MCP is an open protocol that lets an AI assistant connect to tools and data, for example your store admin for reporting. Agentic commerce is about shoppers buying through assistants. For the protocol differences, see Agentic Commerce Protocol Compared: ACP, UCP, AP2 and MCP. For the MCP side of Shopify, see Shopify MCP Server: What Dev MCP and Storefront MCP Do.
What are Shopify Agentic Storefronts and Catalog?
Three names matter:
- Agentic Storefronts: a sales channel in Shopify admin that connects your products to AI shopping platforms. Shopify states there are no apps to install, no custom integrations and no transaction fees beyond standard processing rates. Third-party guides give the path as Settings > Sales Channels > Agentic Storefronts, but the exact label may differ, so look in your own admin.
- Shopify Catalog: the product data layer behind these channels. According to a third-party summary quoting Shopify, merchants with eligible products are in Catalog by default.
- Catalog API: the discovery layer of UCP, which makes product data structured and queryable across AI surfaces. This mainly matters to developers.
Shopify introduced Agentic Storefronts in its Winter '26 Edition (December 2025). Shopify published supplemental terms for the channel in January 2026, which you should read before enabling anything.
What is Shopify UCP and do I need to do anything?
UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol) is an open standard co-developed by Shopify and Google, announced in January 2026, with a public specification. It lets AI platforms discover products and run checkout in a consistent way.
Shopify said in its Spring '26 Edition that merchants are UCP-enabled by default. For most merchants the answer is no action beyond the eligibility checks below. Developers can now build agentic experiences on Shopify's Catalog API and UCP without the approval step that was previously required.
Which AI channels work today, and how does checkout differ?
The channels do not behave the same way. This table summarizes the research; verify each row in the Help Center.
| Channel | Checkout | Main conditions (verify current rules) |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Redirect: buyer finishes on your online store in an in-app browser | Product in Catalog, selling to US buyers |
| Microsoft Copilot | Direct checkout in Copilot, powered by UCP | Sell to US customers, Catalog-eligible products, supplemental terms accepted, policies completed |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Direct checkout, powered by UCP | Google & YouTube channel with product sync on. Still rolling out, and direct checkout may not yet be available |
| Meta (Facebook, Instagram) | Direct checkout reported | Sources conflict on country rules |
Two points deserve emphasis.
ChatGPT is not Instant Checkout for Shopify merchants. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in September 2025, then scaled back, saying it is prioritizing product discovery in ChatGPT search. Several blogs still claim Shopify stores use Instant Checkout with a specific fee. I found no primary source for such a fee, so ignore it. Shopify's own description is a redirect to your checkout.
Google location rules conflict. Shopify's Help Center says US-based stores, while some third-party pages list the UK, Canada and Australia. Check the live page for your country.
How do I get my store ready? (step by step)
Prerequisites: a paid Shopify plan (third-party guides say Starter or higher, no free-trial stores, no password protection), and admin access.
- Open the Agentic Storefronts channel in admin. Read the supplemental terms before accepting. Note which AI channels are listed for your store and which are marked unavailable.
- Fix your policies. Terms of service, privacy policy and refund policy must be completed under Settings > Policies. Shopify's Copilot page lists this as a requirement.
- Audit product data. Per third-party guides, a product needs a title, at least one image, a price above zero, and a published status with a public URL (not unlisted). Products should be published to Online Store, Hydrogen or Headless. Treat this as a minimum, since AI assistants match on descriptions and attributes, so thin copy hurts discovery.
- Check which products are excluded from direct checkout. Third-party sources report that subscriptions, bundles, digital products, customizable products and B2B-only products are not eligible for direct checkout on Google, Copilot and Meta. Confirm in the Help Center.
- Decide on direct checkout per channel. It is on by default for eligible stores, and for Copilot and Google you can turn it on or off per channel. If your checkout depends on extensions or custom logic, test before leaving it on.
- Place a test order. Where possible, buy one eligible product through each live channel and follow the order through fulfillment, taxes, shipping rates and email notifications.
- Brief your team. Customer service should know that some orders now originate in an AI assistant and that the shopper may refer to it.
What should I check about tracking and checkout differences?
The Help Center warns that these channels might render checkout differently than your online store. Third-party sources add that checkout extensions and tracking pixels may be restricted in direct checkout. The notes I had were cut off on this point, so read the current wording on Shopify's page.
In practice, this means:
- Attribution for AI-originated orders may look different from your normal sessions and campaigns.
- Post-purchase upsells, custom checkout fields and scripts may not appear.
- Reporting should be reviewed after the first orders to see how they are labeled in your analytics.
Do not assume your ad platform or analytics setup will capture these orders the same way. Verify instead of guessing.
What does it cost?
Shopify says there are no extra fees for selling through these channels, and standard payment processing fees apply on direct-checkout orders. A third-party summary says the same. There is also an "Agentic Plan" described by third parties for brands that are not on Shopify, at $0 a month with standard transaction rates when products sell through Shopify Checkout. I found no primary Shopify page with those terms, so verify before relying on it.
What can go wrong?
- Product not appearing: most often missing images, a zero price, unpublished status or unlisted URL.
- Policies incomplete: the channel may stay unavailable for you until they are filled in.
- Country mismatch: the rules for stores outside the US are unclear and differ between sources. A channel that works for a US store may not be offered to you.
- Stale advice: blog posts from 2025 describe ChatGPT Instant Checkout and old waitlists. Check the date and compare to Shopify's pages.
- Unexpected checkout behavior: direct checkout can drop customizations. Turn it off for a channel if the test order shows problems.
- Margin blind spots: being shown in more places does not mean profitable orders. Watch discounts, shipping costs and returns on AI-originated orders.
What can you not do with this yet?
Agentic Storefronts does not let you control how an assistant ranks or describes your products. You influence it indirectly through product data quality and policies. It also does not guarantee volume: eligibility makes you discoverable, not recommended. Rollout is uneven by channel and country, and Shopify's Google and Meta availability was still developing in the sources I reviewed.
What should agencies do for clients?
Run the same checklist across accounts: eligibility, policies, excluded product types, per-channel checkout settings, and a test order. Keep a record of which toggles you changed and when, so unexplained changes in order sources can be traced. Do this as a review first. Change settings only with the merchant's agreement, since direct checkout can alter the customer experience.
What is a sensible order of priorities?
- Complete policies and product data (no cost, helps everywhere).
- Enable Agentic Storefronts and read the terms.
- Leave ChatGPT as redirect, which keeps the customer on your store.
- Test direct checkout on one channel before accepting it across all.
- Review order and attribution data after a few weeks.
Agentic commerce on Shopify is currently a low-effort, low-risk set of checks, and the main risk is acting on outdated information. Confirm each rule against Shopify's Help Center before you change a setting.
Frequently asked questions
+What is Shopify Agentic Storefronts?
Agentic Storefronts is a Shopify sales channel that connects your products to AI shopping platforms such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta. Shopify says it needs no app installs or custom integrations and adds no transaction fees beyond standard processing. Availability and checkout style differ by channel and country, so check your admin and the Help Center.
+What is Shopify UCP?
UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol) is an open standard co-developed by Shopify and Google, announced in January 2026. It gives AI platforms a consistent way to discover products and run checkout. Shopify said in its Spring '26 Edition that merchants are UCP-enabled by default, so most stores do not need to configure it themselves.
+Can Shopify customers buy inside ChatGPT?
Not through OpenAI's Instant Checkout, according to current reporting. OpenAI scaled that back to focus on product discovery. Shopify describes the ChatGPT flow as a redirect, where the buyer completes the purchase on your online store in an in-app browser. Ignore older blog posts that mention Instant Checkout fees for Shopify merchants.
+Do I have to pay extra for agentic commerce on Shopify?
Shopify states there are no extra fees for selling through Agentic Storefronts, and standard payment processing fees apply on direct-checkout orders. Some third-party blogs mention other fees, but I could not trace them to a primary source. Read Shopify's supplemental terms and Help Center pages for the current position.
+Why are my products not showing in AI channels?
Common causes are a missing image, a price of zero, an unpublished or unlisted product, incomplete policies, or a plan or country that is not eligible. Direct checkout also excludes some product types, such as subscriptions and bundles, per third-party sources. Check the Agentic Storefronts channel in admin and the Shopify Help Center.
+Is agentic commerce the same as MCP?
No. MCP (Model Context Protocol) connects an AI assistant to tools and data, such as your store reports. Agentic commerce is about shoppers discovering and buying products through an AI assistant, using protocols such as UCP and ACP. They can coexist on the same store, but they solve different problems.
