The short answer

Yes, you can connect Claude to Shopify. Claude has a Shopify connector in its Connectors Directory: open the connectors settings in Claude, choose Shopify, click Connect, sign in to your store and approve the permissions. Developers can also use Shopify's Dev MCP server with Claude Code. Start with read-only access and check current details with Anthropic and Shopify.

You can connect Claude to Shopify in a few minutes using the Shopify connector in Claude's Connectors Directory. You do not install anything from the Shopify App Store. You add the connector from inside Claude, sign in to your Shopify admin, and approve the permissions. This guide covers that route, the developer route for Claude Code, what can go wrong, and how to limit risk.

The connector runs on MCP (Model Context Protocol), an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to external tools and data. If the term is new, read What Is MCP? A Plain-English Guide for E-commerce Merchants first.

A note on sources: the details below come mostly from third-party guides and Anthropic's support pages, not from Shopify's own documentation. Menu names and plan requirements change, so check the points marked "verify" against Anthropic and Shopify before you rely on them.

Does Claude have a Shopify integration?

Yes. Several guides describe a Shopify connector listed in Claude's Connectors Directory, built and maintained by Shopify, with read and write capabilities. One secondary source dates its launch to May 2026. Treat that date as unconfirmed.

Some older articles say there is no official one-click Shopify and Claude integration. Those appear to be outdated. The directory listing page (reported at claude.com/connectors/shopify) is the place to confirm what is currently offered, which plans can use it, and what it can do.

There are three ways to connect Claude to Shopify:

Route Who it is for What it does Code needed
Official Shopify connector Merchants, marketers, store managers Reads and, if approved, edits store data such as products and orders No
Custom connector (remote MCP) Teams with another MCP server they trust Connects Claude to any remote MCP server URL No, but you need the server URL
Shopify Dev MCP / AI Toolkit Developers and agencies Gives Claude Code access to Shopify's API documentation and schemas Yes, command line

What do you need before you start?

  • A Claude account. Custom connectors are available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, with Free limited to one custom connector. Whether the Shopify directory connector needs a paid plan is not confirmed in the sources I found. Verify it on Claude's site.
  • A Shopify login with permission to approve app access for your store. Ideally this is the store owner or a staff account with the rights you actually want Claude to have.
  • On Team or Enterprise plans, an Owner or Primary Owner must enable the connector first. Members then connect individually.
  • A decision on scope: read-only or read and write. Make it before you click through.

How do you connect Claude to Shopify with the connector?

  1. Open Claude (web or Claude Desktop) and go to the connectors settings. Anthropic's help center calls this Customize, then Connectors. Other guides say Settings, then Connectors. Use whichever your current interface shows.
  2. Find Shopify in the directory.
  3. Click Connect. Claude sends you to your Shopify admin.
  4. Sign in to the store you want to link. Access is granted to one store at a time.
  5. Read the permission screen carefully. Choose read-only if the option is offered. Reports differ on whether read-only is a choice at install, so check what the screen actually lists.
  6. Approve. Return to Claude and enable the connector for your conversation.
  7. Test with a harmless question, such as asking for your ten most recent orders or a list of products with no description.

What can the Claude Shopify connector do?

Based on secondary sources (one lists 25 tools), the connector can:

  • Search and read products, collections, orders and customer records.
  • With write access, create and update products, change product status in bulk, correct stock at a single location, and create percentage discount codes and collections.

That makes it useful for catalog audits, finding products with missing data, drafting product copy, summarizing recent orders, and preparing bulk changes you then review. For ideas on where this fits in marketing work, see Ten MCP Use Cases for E-commerce Marketing Teams.

What can it not do?

  • It does not process refunds, cancellations, payment captures, returns or gift cards. One source says Shopify blocks these even with write access, and that orders and customers are read only.
  • It does not edit your theme. That needs a developer setup.
  • It does not react to events. A scheduled task can check your store on a timer, but nothing fires the moment an order arrives or stock runs out.
  • It has no staging sandbox. A change made to the live store is a change to the live store.
  • It covers one store per connection, so agencies managing several shops connect each separately.
  • It reports Shopify data only. Ad platform and analytics numbers need their own connectors, such as the ones described in Connect Claude to GA4 with the Google Analytics MCP Server.

Is it safe? Start read-only

Claude can only do what the permissions you approve allow, and write actions need your approval in Shopify. That helps, but it is not a safety net for bad instructions. Practical rules:

  • Start with read-only access for the first week. Move to write access only for a task that needs it.
  • Review the read and write permissions on the Shopify install screen every time. Do not click through.
  • Ask Claude to show the changes it plans to make (product IDs, old and new values) before you approve a bulk edit.
  • Export or back up your product data before any bulk write.
  • Avoid pasting API tokens or customer personal data into chat unnecessarily.
  • Remember that order and customer records are personal data. Check your privacy obligations before asking Claude to process them, and consider who in your team should be able to connect.
  • On Team plans, limit who can enable the connector and revoke access in Shopify when staff leave.

How do you use a Shopify MCP server with Claude Code?

This route is for developers and agencies. Shopify open-sourced its AI Toolkit in April 2026 (per secondary sources). It connects Claude, Cursor, VS Code and other tools to Shopify's Admin API documentation and GraphQL schemas. It helps Claude write correct code and queries. It is not a merchant dashboard.

Prerequisites: Node.js 18 or newer and Claude Code installed.

Reported options:

  • Plugin install (recommended by one source): claude plugin install shopify-ai-toolkit@claude-plugins-official. Another recent page still shows an older two-step marketplace flow, so command names are in flux. Check Shopify's developer documentation on shopify.dev before running anything.
  • Dev MCP server directly: claude mcp add --transport stdio shopify-dev-mcp -- npx -y @shopify/dev-mcp@latest.
  • Claude Desktop: the same server can be added in the JSON configuration file with the command npx and arguments -y and @shopify/dev-mcp@latest. The example I found came from an unofficial mirror, so confirm it against Shopify's docs.

A local server like this runs on your computer through stdio (standard input and output), so it works in Claude Desktop and Claude Code but not as a web custom connector. According to the notes I found, store operations through the toolkit use the Shopify CLI: Claude generates a mutation (a GraphQL write request), validates it, authenticates against your store and runs it with a flag that explicitly allows mutations. That flag is a useful checkpoint. Do not run it against a live store without reading the query first, and try a development store before production.

Can you add Shopify as a custom connector instead?

If you have a remote MCP server URL you trust, you can add it yourself. In Claude, go to Customize, then Connectors, click Add, hover over Custom and choose Web. Paste the server URL. If the server does not use OAuth (a sign-in flow), add fixed credentials as request headers. On Team and Enterprise plans only Owners can add custom connectors.

Claude reaches remote servers from Anthropic's cloud, so the server must be publicly reachable. Localhost, VPN-only or private servers will not work this way. Anthropic's support pages on custom connectors and on using connectors give the current steps. For background on what the Shopify endpoints expose, see Shopify MCP Explained: How AI Assistants Read Your Catalog.

How do you use Claude with Shopify day to day?

Good starting tasks, all possible in read-only mode:

  • List products missing images, descriptions or tags.
  • Summarize last week's orders by product or location.
  • Find customers with more than one order and describe the pattern.
  • Compare collections and spot overlap.

Then, once you trust the results, try small writes: updating a handful of product descriptions, or creating one discount code. Check each result in the Shopify admin.

What can go wrong?

  • The connector is missing. Plan, region or organization settings may hide it. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner may not have enabled it.
  • Wrong store. If you manage several shops, confirm which store you are signed in to before approving.
  • Menu names differ. Settings, Connectors versus Customize, Connectors. Look for the word Connectors.
  • Claude says it cannot do something. Refunds, cancellations and theme edits are outside the connector.
  • Confident but wrong answers. Claude can misread data or summarize incompletely. Verify figures against Shopify reports before acting on them.
  • Unintended bulk edits. A vague prompt can change many products. Be specific and ask for a preview.
  • Outdated commands. Developer install commands are changing quickly. Rely on Shopify's documentation over blog posts.

Next step

Connect with read-only access, run three or four read tasks, and only then decide whether write access is worth it for your team.

Frequently asked questions

+Does Claude have Shopify integration?

Yes. Claude has a Shopify connector in its Connectors Directory, reported to be built and maintained by Shopify. You add it from inside Claude, not the Shopify App Store. Some older articles say no official integration exists, but they appear outdated. Confirm current availability and plan requirements on Claude's connector page.

+How do I connect Claude to Shopify?

Open the connectors settings in Claude, find Shopify, click Connect, sign in to your store in Shopify admin and approve the permissions. Choose read-only if offered. On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner must enable the connector first. Menu names vary between Customize and Settings, so look for Connectors.

+Is the Shopify MCP server for Claude safe to use?

It can be, if you limit access. Start read-only, review permissions on the install screen, preview bulk changes, and back up product data before writes. There is no staging sandbox, so changes affect the live store. Order and customer data is personal data, so consider who should have access.

+Can Claude issue refunds or edit my Shopify theme?

According to the sources I found, no. Shopify reportedly blocks refunds, cancellations, payment captures, returns and gift cards through the connector, and it does not edit themes. Theme work needs a developer setup such as Shopify's Dev MCP with Claude Code. Verify current limits in Shopify's documentation.

+What is the difference between the Shopify connector and Shopify Dev MCP?

The connector is for merchants. It works with your actual store data, such as products and orders, with no code. Dev MCP is for developers. It gives Claude Code access to Shopify's API documentation and schemas so it can write correct code. It runs locally and is installed from the command line.

+Do I need a paid Claude plan to connect Shopify?

Not confirmed. Anthropic states that custom connectors work on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, with Free limited to one. The sources I found do not say whether the Shopify directory connector has a plan requirement. Check Claude's connector page before you plan a rollout.
