Angeo MCP Server module

A self-hosted, open-source Magento 2 and Adobe Commerce module that exposes the store catalog to AI agents over MCP. Version 1 is read-only and shows what an anonymous shopper could see.

What it is and why it matters

The Angeo MCP Server module is a community-built, open-source Magento 2 and Adobe Commerce module, installed with Composer on a self-hosted store. It adds an /mcp endpoint that lets MCP-compatible AI clients (the documentation mentions Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT-based agents and custom assistants) read your catalog directly instead of scraping pages. Four tools are listed in the documentation: search_products, get_product, list_categories and get_store_info. They return live prices, stock, URLs and category trees as an anonymous shopper would see them. Disabled, invisible and other-website products are treated as absent.

It suits Magento merchants and agencies with a developer on hand who want a read-only connection they host and control. There is no external service, Redis requirement or SaaS dependency. How well it works depends on three things: your Magento and PHP versions matching the package requirements, a full-page cache (Varnish or LiteSpeed) that does not cache the /mcp path, and a clear store label so AI models recognise your shop by name. This is not an official Adobe or Magento product, so check the repository's maintenance activity and the README before using it on a live store. The documentation also describes opt-in cart and checkout tools as roadmap items, so do not assume they are available.

What it does

  • Expose products, categories and prices to MCP clients
  • Run inside your Magento installation as a Composer module
  • Answer catalog questions without exposing admin data
  • Serve as a starting point for a custom Magento MCP

Best for

Magento merchants and developers who want a safe, read-only catalog connection they control.

How to connect it

  1. Confirm your store meets the requirements in the documentation: Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 or later, and PHP 8.1 to 8.5. Try it on a staging copy first, and check the README and Packagist page for maintenance activity.
  2. Have a developer install it as described in the documentation: require the angeo/module-mcp-server package with Composer, enable the Angeo_McpServer module, run setup:upgrade, then flush the cache.
  3. Make sure the /mcp path is never served from Varnish, LiteSpeed or other full-page cache. The documentation gives example rules for both and warns that a cached JSON-RPC response is invalid.
  4. Check the settings in Stores, Configuration, Angeo, MCP Server. The server is enabled read-only by default. Set the store label to the name customers know you by, and review the rate limit, page size and the customer group that decides which prices agents see.
  5. Verify it works using the CLI tools command or the HTTP tools/list request shown in the documentation. Then add the /mcp URL of your store to an MCP client such as Claude Code, using the configuration format in the README.
  6. Optional: to require a token, create an integration under System, Extensions, Integrations, grant it only the MCP Server Agent Access resource, copy the access token and turn on Require Bearer Token, as described in the documentation.

Exact commands and addresses change. Use the official documentation for the current steps.

Questions you can ask it

  • Search the store for mugs under a given price and show name, price, stock status and URL for the first few results.
  • Get the full product card for a specific SKU, including configurable variants with option values, price and stock.
  • List the active category tree two levels deep with product counts, so I can check what shoppers see.
  • What are this store's currency, locale and ships-to countries according to get_store_info?

What it cannot do

  • It cannot read orders, customers or other admin data. Version 1 shows only what an anonymous shopper could see, with prices for the configured customer group.
  • It cannot create carts or start checkout in the documented read-only mode. Cart and checkout tools are described only as an opt-in roadmap item.
  • Its /mcp endpoint cannot be added to Claude directly as a shopper connector, because it has no OAuth. The Add to Claude button needs a separate HTTPS connector URL from a provider that fronts the server with authorization. Also, it cannot guarantee that an AI model picks your store for a generic product request.

Staying safe

  • Keep it read-only. Leave the default public read-only mode or turn on Require Bearer Token, and give any integration only the MCP Server Agent Access resource. Revoking the integration cuts agent access immediately, according to the documentation.
  • Test on staging before production. This is a community module, so check version support, maintenance activity and the README, and make sure /mcp bypasses full-page cache so responses are not served incorrectly.
  • Keep the rate limit on (documented default is 60 requests per minute per IP) and review the agent call log in var/log. The documentation says the log records timestamp, tool, user agent and duration, never payloads or tokens. Remember that public mode exposes catalog data to anyone who can reach the endpoint.

Watch out for: Community module: check maintenance activity, Magento version support and the README before installing on a production store.

Frequently asked questions

+Does the Angeo MCP Server module let AI agents change my Magento store?

Not in the documented version. It is read-only by default and exposes catalog search, product details, categories and store info, limited to what an anonymous shopper can see. Cart and checkout tools are listed as an opt-in roadmap item. Check the README for your installed version before assuming any write features exist.

+Which Magento versions does the Angeo MCP Server support?

The Packagist page lists Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 or later, with PHP 8.1 to 8.5, plus required Magento catalog, inventory, customer, integration and store modules. It is for self-hosted Magento. Confirm compatibility with your exact version on staging and in the README before production use.

+Do I need a token to use the Angeo MCP endpoint?

No, public read-only mode is the default and exposes only storefront-visible data. You can optionally require a bearer token by creating an integration in the Magento admin, granting it the MCP Server Agent Access resource, and enabling Require Bearer Token. Agents then send the token in an Authorization header.
