Ecommerce Marketing Prompts for AI Assistants and MCP Servers
Updated · 7 min read

The short answer
Ecommerce marketing prompts work best when they name a job, a date range, a metric and an output format, and when the assistant can read your real data through an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server. Without that connection, the assistant guesses. This article groups representative prompts by job and lists the data source each one needs.
Ecommerce marketing prompts are most useful when they ask for one specific job and the AI assistant can read your real numbers. That second part usually comes from MCP (Model Context Protocol), an open standard that lets an assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT connect to tools like Google Ads, Klaviyo or Shopify. Without a connection, the assistant can still write copy, but it cannot tell you how your campaigns performed.
A caveat first: no reputable dataset ranks the prompts marketers send most often. Anthropic, OpenAI and the MCP vendors have not published prompt-frequency data. The prompts below are editorial picks that match the jobs vendors and marketers commonly demonstrate, not a measured top ten. One secondary roundup reports content creation as the most common marketing use of AI (55% of marketers), but treat that as a rough signal and check the original source.
How do I write an ecommerce marketing prompt that works?
Good prompts share five parts:
- Role and goal: what the assistant should act as and what decision you are making.
- Data source: which connected account to use (for example, "use Google Ads").
- Scope: account, date range, and comparison period.
- Metric definitions: say whether you mean revenue, conversion value or profit.
- Output format: a table, a ranked list, or three recommendations with reasons.
Add one more line to almost every prompt: "Read only. Do not change anything. If data is missing, say so instead of estimating." It reduces both accidental edits and invented numbers.
Which MCP server does each prompt need?
| Job | Data source | MCP server option | Typical access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ad performance review | Google Ads | Google's open-source Google Ads server | Read-only reporting |
| Social ad review | Meta Ads | Meta ads AI connectors (open beta) | Reported to include write access |
| Email and SMS analysis | Klaviyo | Klaviyo's official MCP server | Configurable scopes |
| Traffic and conversion analysis | GA4 | Google's open-source Analytics server | Verify in Google's docs |
| Catalog and order questions | Shopify | Community Admin API servers (see below) | Depends on the credentials you issue |
| Copywriting only | None | No server needed | Not applicable |
Treat this table as a starting point. Server features change, so confirm tools and permissions in each vendor's documentation. For a wider comparison, see Best MCP Servers for E-commerce and Marketing Teams (2026).
Which prompts work for Google Ads and Meta Ads?
These are the most common "read my account" requests. Google's server exposes three tools: listing accessible accounts, running a search (a query in Google's GAQL query language), and reading resource metadata. It is read-only, so it can report but cannot pause a campaign or change a bid. Prompts that ask the assistant to "pause losers" need a different, write-capable server, and that is a risk decision, not just a setup step.
Wasted spend review
Using Google Ads, list campaigns from the last 30 days with spend above [amount] and zero conversions. Show spend, clicks and conversions in a table. Do not make changes.
Search terms audit
Pull search terms from [campaign] for the last 30 days. Group them into: relevant, irrelevant, and unclear. Suggest negative keywords, but label each as a suggestion for me to review.
Period comparison
Compare last 14 days to the previous 14 days for [account]. Which campaigns changed most in cost per conversion? List possible causes, and mark which ones the data supports and which are guesses.
Meta creative fatigue
Using Meta Ads, show ad-level frequency, CTR and cost per result for the last 21 days. Flag ads where frequency is rising while CTR is falling.
Meta launched official ad connectors in April 2026 as an open beta, with OAuth sign-in and a reported write capability. Confirm the setup details in Meta's Business Help Center and start read-only. What prompts work for email and SMS?
Klaviyo offers an official MCP server with tools covering campaigns, flows, profiles, reporting, catalogs and events. Klaviyo describes uses such as pulling campaign reports and comparing flow performance. Because the server can also create campaigns, limit the scopes you grant. One third-party guide notes that a full-access setup means a single careless prompt could launch something unintended.
Flow performance
Using Klaviyo, compare revenue per recipient for my welcome, abandoned cart and post-purchase flows over the last 90 days. Tell me which email in each flow has the weakest click rate.
Campaign retrospective
List my last 10 email campaigns with open rate, click rate and revenue. Identify patterns in subject lines and send times. Do not treat open rate as reliable without noting mail privacy effects.
Draft only
Write three subject line options and one preview text for [offer], matching the tone of my five best-performing campaigns. Save nothing and send nothing.
What prompts work for analytics and reporting?
GA4 prompts are useful for traffic, landing page and funnel questions. Reporting prompts are where the assistant saves the most time, because it can pull from several sources and write the summary.
Funnel check
Using GA4, show sessions, add-to-cart rate and purchase rate by device category for the last 28 days. Where is the biggest drop?
Weekly report
Build a weekly report for [store] covering spend (Google Ads, Meta), sessions (GA4), email revenue (Klaviyo) and orders. Use a table, then three bullets: what changed, why it might have changed, and what to verify.
A multi-source report only works if each source is connected, and the numbers will not match across tools. Ad platforms, GA4 and the store count conversions differently. Ask the assistant to list each figure's source, and read MCP Marketing Analytics: Connect Ad, Store and Email Data for how to set that up.
What prompts work for product content and catalog work?
Copy prompts need no server, but they improve when the assistant can see your catalog.
Description rewrite
Rewrite this product description for [audience] in under 80 words. Use only the facts below. Do not add materials, sizes, certifications or claims I did not provide: [paste specs].
Catalog gap scan
From the product data you can access, list products missing a description, image alt text or a product type. Return a table. Do not edit anything.
Be careful with Shopify. Shopify's official hosted servers are aimed at shoppers and developers: the Storefront MCP is built for agents shopping on a customer's behalf, and the Dev MCP supports building apps and does not connect to your store data. One source says Shopify has no official Admin MCP for live store management, and that most merchants use community servers. Documentation here has been changing, including around the Universal Commerce Protocol, so check shopify.dev before you choose a setup. See Shopify MCP Server: What Dev MCP and Storefront MCP Do.
What should I check in the answer?
Assistants write fluent answers even when the data is thin. Check these every time:
- Date range and account: did it use the ones you named?
- Metric definition: revenue, conversion value and profit are not interchangeable. If you care about margin, say so, because most ad platform data does not include costs.
- Row counts: if a query returned a limited number of rows, the totals may be partial. Ask it to state how many rows it read.
- Causes versus correlations: "CTR fell because of creative fatigue" is a hypothesis unless the data shows it.
- Calculations: spot-check two or three numbers in the platform's own interface.
- Recommendations: treat them as drafts. Nothing should go live because the assistant said so.
What can go wrong?
- Unintended changes: write-capable servers can edit campaigns or send email. Use read-only access first, and add write scopes only for a narrow, tested task.
- Over-broad permissions: use the least-privileged account that answers the question. Agencies should connect one client at a time.
- Invented figures: if a connection fails, some assistants fall back on plausible-looking guesses. The "say so if data is missing" line helps but does not remove the risk.
- Customer data exposure: do not paste or pull personal data into an assistant unless your policies allow it. The MCP Security: Is MCP Safe for Your Store? A Merchant Checklist covers this.
- Outdated guides: server names, tools and endpoints change. Prefer vendor documentation over blog posts, including this one.
Where should I start?
Pick one job, connect one read-only source, and run one prompt you can verify by hand. A weekly Google Ads wasted-spend review or a Klaviyo flow comparison are practical first choices. Once the answers match what you see in the platform, add a second source. For more workflows beyond prompts, see Ten MCP Use Cases for E-commerce Marketing Teams.
Frequently asked questions
+What are the best prompts for ecommerce marketing?
There is no measured ranking, so "best" depends on the job. The most practical ones ask for a specific review: wasted ad spend, flow performance, funnel drop-off or a weekly report. They name the data source, date range, metric and output format, and they tell the assistant not to change anything or guess.
+Do I need MCP to use ecommerce marketing prompts?
No for writing tasks such as subject lines or product descriptions. Yes if you want answers based on your own data, such as ad spend, email revenue or sessions. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is what lets the assistant read those accounts instead of working from numbers you paste in by hand.
+Can an AI assistant change my ad campaigns through MCP?
It depends on the server. Google's official Google Ads server is read-only and cannot pause campaigns or change bids. Meta's connectors are reported to include write access, and Klaviyo's server can create campaigns. Start read-only, limit scopes, and add write access only for a narrow task you have tested.
+Which MCP server do I need for Klaviyo email prompts?
Klaviyo offers its own official MCP server, which it recommends running as the remote-hosted version. It covers campaigns, flows, profiles, reporting, catalogs and events, and works with clients such as Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and VS Code. Check Klaviyo's developer documentation for current roles, scopes and setup steps.
+How do I know if an AI answer about my ad data is correct?
Spot-check two or three figures in the platform itself, confirm the date range and account, and ask the assistant how many rows it read. Check that it used the metric you meant. Treat explanations of why performance changed as hypotheses unless the data directly supports them.
