How to install Attentive MCP Server

In Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, Cursor and Claude Code, with what to check before you start and the first prompts to run.

Connecting the Attentive MCP server means adding a vendor-hosted remote server to your AI client and signing in with your own Attentive user. Nothing runs on your machine. The assistant can only do what that user can do in the Attentive UI. The server exposes 74 tools, 34 read-only and 40 write-enabled, and the documentation marks it as a beta, so tool names and behavior may change.

A marketing or CRM lead who already has an Attentive login should do this, using their own named account rather than a shared one. Ask an Attentive admin to confirm the permissions on that user first. A write-enabled connection can delete campaigns and journeys and expose segment subscribers, so start read-only and add write access only for supervised tasks.

Before you start

  • An Attentive user account whose permissions match what you want the assistant to be able to do, since the assistant inherits them.
  • Access to the company or companies in Attentive that you plan to query. The vendor has a separate page on working across companies.
  • An MCP client the documentation names (Claude Code or ChatGPT Codex), or another MCP client you are allowed to use.
  • The server address and sign-in method from the vendor Installation page, which this guide does not reproduce.
  • A decision on whether you need read-only access first. Where the connection offers a read-only choice, plan to use it.

Attentive MCP Server in Claude Desktop

  1. The Attentive documentation names Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex and says other MCP clients can connect. It does not cover Claude Desktop specifically, so the steps below are the standard approach.
  2. Open the vendor Installation page in Attentive's developer docs and copy the server address and sign-in method it gives. Do not use an address from a third party.
  3. In Claude Desktop, open the settings area for connectors or integrations and choose to add a custom remote MCP server by URL.
  4. Paste the vendor's server address, name the connection clearly (for example Attentive, read-only), and save.
  5. Complete the sign-in with your own Attentive user. Choose the read-only option if the connection offers one, as described in the vendor docs.
  6. Confirm the Attentive tools appear in the client, then run the verification prompts below before enabling anything that writes.

Attentive MCP Server in ChatGPT

  1. The Attentive documentation names ChatGPT Codex as a supported client. It does not describe the regular ChatGPT app, so check which product your team actually uses.
  2. Open the vendor Installation page and take the exact connection steps, server address and sign-in method from there.
  3. In ChatGPT, open the settings area for connectors or developer mode and add a custom remote MCP server by URL. Availability depends on your plan and workspace admin settings.
  4. Enter the vendor's server address, name the connection clearly, and sign in with your own Attentive user.
  5. Select the read-only choice if the connection options offer it, and review any other options the vendor documents for connection time.
  6. Start a new chat with the connector enabled and run the verification prompts below.

Attentive MCP Server in Cursor

  1. The Attentive documentation does not mention Cursor by name, but says other MCP clients can connect. These are the standard steps for Cursor.
  2. Get the server address and sign-in method from the vendor Installation page. Do not copy them from a third party.
  3. In Cursor, open the settings area for MCP servers and choose to add a new remote server by URL.
  4. Paste the vendor's server address, save, and complete the sign-in with your own Attentive user.
  5. Review the connection options described in the vendor docs and pick read-only if offered.
  6. Check that the Attentive tools are listed and enabled, then run the verification prompts below.

Attentive MCP Server in Claude Code

  1. Claude Code is one of the two clients named in the Attentive documentation. Open the vendor Installation page and follow its Claude Code instructions.
  2. Take the exact command or configuration, the server address and the sign-in method from the vendor page. This guide does not reproduce them because they are not in the text we reviewed.
  3. Add the Attentive server to Claude Code using Claude Code's standard way of adding a remote MCP server, as the vendor page describes.
  4. Complete the sign-in with your own Attentive user, and select the read-only option if one is offered at connection time.
  5. Use Claude Code's MCP server listing to confirm that Attentive appears and its tools are available.
  6. Run the verification prompts below before you allow any prompt that creates, edits or deletes anything.

Check that it works

Start with questions that only read data. If these answer from your real account, the connection is good.

  • List my recent Attentive campaigns and summarize their performance. Do not create or change anything.
  • Show the segments and journeys currently configured in my Attentive account. Read only, no edits.
  • Which Attentive tools are available to you in this connection, and which of them can write or delete data?

Troubleshooting

+Sign-in loops or fails when I connect. What should I check?

Confirm you are signing in with the Attentive user you intend to use and that it has access to the company you want. Then remove the server entry from your client, add it again using the address and sign-in method from the vendor Installation page, and check the vendor Troubleshooting page for known sign-in issues.

+Some tools are missing, or a write action is refused. Why?

The server is scoped to what your Attentive user can do in the Attentive UI, and the options chosen at connection may limit which tools are offered. Check your user's permissions in Attentive and the options you selected. Tool names may also change during the beta, so refresh your client's tool list and check the vendor's Capabilities page.

+My client does not list the Attentive server after I add it. What now?

Restart the client and check that the entry was saved in its MCP settings. Confirm you used the exact address from the vendor Installation page, not one from a third party. Clients differ in how they show remote servers, and the Attentive docs only name Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex, so check your client's own documentation.
