What it is and why it matters

The miniOrange MCP Server is an extension listed on the Adobe Commerce Marketplace for Magento 2, Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source 2.4. Once installed, it lets MCP-compatible AI assistants such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT, Gemini and GitHub Copilot work with live store data. The documentation describes 73 abilities covering orders, products, customers, inventory, invoices, shipments, CMS content, promotions and sales analytics. The assistant reaches them through three meta-tools: discover_abilities, get_ability_info and execute_ability.

It suits Magento merchants and agencies who want order lookups, stock audits, catalog checks and checkout QA in plain language, without admin grid navigation or developer tickets. How well it works depends mostly on the Magento token or admin user you connect. Admin abilities inherit that token's or user's Magento ACL, so a narrow role limits what the assistant can see and change. The documentation says some abilities can change data (for example hold, cancel and update inventory). Start with a read-only role, and check the licence terms and the vendor's description of the free version before connecting a live store.

What it does

  • Connect Magento 2 store data to MCP clients such as Claude or Cursor
  • Manage access and permissions from the Magento admin
  • Commercial support from the vendor
  • Covers store operations beyond the public catalog, depending on configuration

Best for

Magento merchants who want a supported, commercial module and are willing to pay for it.

How to connect it

  1. Check that your store matches the compatibility listed: Adobe Commerce (cloud), Adobe Commerce (on-prem) or Magento Open Source, version 2.4. Test on a staging copy first.
  2. Install the extension from the Adobe Commerce Marketplace listing, following the vendor's installation guides linked from the listing. The listing says no miniOrange account is needed for the free version.
  3. In the Magento admin, create an integration token, or use OAuth mapped to a Magento admin user, as described in the documentation. Grant only the resources you need, such as Sales or Catalog. Start with read-only access where your role setup allows it.
  4. Add the store's Magento MCP endpoint to your MCP client (Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT or another). Follow the vendor documentation for the exact endpoint and client settings. ChatGPT connects through OAuth with an admin consent screen, per the 3.0.0 release notes.
  5. Ask the assistant to discover abilities, then run a harmless query such as pending orders from the last 7 days. Confirm the results match the Magento admin.
  6. If something fails, use the support email in the listing or submit a query from the extension's configuration page in the Magento admin.

Exact commands and addresses change. Use the official documentation for the current steps.

Questions you can ask it

  • Show me pending orders from the last 7 days and flag any that need attention.
  • Find products with 'shirt' in the name and stock below 10, and list restock candidates.
  • List the invoices issued this month and give me the order totals by week.
  • Which CMS blocks or pages reference the summer sale?

What it cannot do

  • It does not work with stores outside Magento 2, Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source 2.4, and you must install it on your own store.
  • It has no separate MCP permission grid. Admin access follows Magento ACL by resource, so you cannot allow reading a product but block updating it. Both share one ACL check.
  • Storefront abilities, including guest cart and checkout simulation, are not scoped by Magento roles. Catalog browsing is public, so this layer cannot be restricted by ACL.

Staying safe

  • Use a dedicated integration token or admin user with the narrowest Magento ACL that covers the task. Avoid full administrator roles. Admin abilities include write actions such as holding or cancelling orders, updating inventory and bulk catalog updates.
  • The documentation says write actions require confirm=true. Review each write request yourself before approving it, and do write tasks only under supervision, ideally on staging first.
  • Revoke access in the Magento admin when you finish. Revoked, expired or deleted tokens are rejected on the next call. Store data goes directly to your Magento endpoint, but licence and account checks still use miniOrange. Check the licence terms and the optional agent logs, which stay in Magento.

Watch out for: Commercial product: check which actions it enables, its permission model and licence terms before connecting a live store.

+Can the AI change orders or products in my Magento store?
