Google Ads MCP Server

An open-source server from Google that lets an assistant query Google Ads accounts for reporting and analysis.

What it is and why it matters

The Google Ads MCP server is an open-source tool from Google that lets an AI assistant read your Google Ads accounts. Instead of exporting reports and pasting them into a chat, you ask a question in plain language and the assistant runs the query against your account and answers from the live numbers.

It is read-only, which is the main reason it is a sensible first MCP connection for advertisers and agencies. It can tell you where money went and what happened, but it cannot change bids, budgets or campaigns. It runs on your own machine and needs Google Ads API access, so setup takes more effort than a one-click connector.

What it does

  • Runs GAQL queries
  • Lists accessible accounts
  • Pulls campaign, ad group and keyword performance

Best for

Audits, reporting and anomaly checks across one or many accounts.

How to connect it

  1. Get a Google Ads API developer token, which is requested from a Google Ads manager account.
  2. Create OAuth credentials (or use application default credentials) that have access to the accounts you want to query.
  3. Install and run the server on your computer as described in the project's README on GitHub.
  4. Add the server to your AI tool's MCP settings, then provide the customer ID of the account, and the manager account ID if you work through one.
  5. Start with a simple question, such as listing the accounts the credentials can reach, before running larger analysis.

Exact commands and addresses change. Use the official documentation for the current steps.

Questions you can ask it

  • Which campaigns spent more than 20 percent of the budget last week and returned less than the account average ROAS?
  • List search terms from the last 30 days with more than 50 in spend and no conversions.
  • Compare conversion value and cost by campaign this month against last month and explain the biggest changes.
  • Show Performance Max asset groups ordered by cost with their conversion value.

What it cannot do

  • It cannot change anything: no pausing campaigns, editing bids or creating ads.
  • It reports the conversion value Google Ads holds. If that value is revenue, you will get revenue-based ROAS, not profit.
  • It cannot fix broken conversion tracking. Wrong or missing conversions in the account produce wrong answers.

Staying safe

  • Treat the developer token and OAuth credentials like passwords and keep them out of chats and shared files.
  • Use the least access that works: read access to the accounts you actually need.
  • Verify any figure you will act on against the Google Ads interface before changing spend.

Watch out for: Needs a developer token and OAuth setup. Read-only means it reports on spend but cannot change it.

Frequently asked questions

+Does Google Ads have an MCP server?

Yes. Google publishes an open-source Google Ads MCP server that gives an assistant read-only access to query accounts. It is run locally and needs developer token and OAuth setup.

+Can Claude or ChatGPT change my Google Ads campaigns through it?

Not through this server, which is read-only. Third-party servers may offer write actions, and those need much more caution.

+Is it free?

The server is open source. API usage follows Google Ads API terms, and your AI tool has its own pricing.
